Making a Run for It

We have gotten a wild “hare” and are making a run for it! It has been a long and grueling summer. We have both been going stir-crazy, confined to the homestead for my recovery and rehabilitation. The physical therapy sessions are finally over. So we have bolted away for a short road test of my new knee and endurance.

The destination is the charming Tennessee town of Franklin, located south of Nashville. Our agenda for the next few days will include exploration, relaxation, and photography!

Marty is in charge of the homestead during our absence. And mischief will certainly be on his agenda, of course!

New Bed Arrival

Shaker-style bed with PA Amish quilt
The new bed finally arrived yesterday – yeah! Gee whiz, that furniture store needs to be more honest in their estimated delivery dates. We were supposed to get it two weeks ago! But it is here now, and we are happy with the results.

The delivery fellows first disassembled the old bed (shown here), and then set up the new one in no time flat. This one is delightfully shorter, so I no longer struggle to get in and out of bed! We are still getting our minds recalibrated on its stature and completely different look, LOL. We also got two new side tables to match the bed, and we are glad that we did. The extra drawers are handy and the look is cozier.

We moved the other tables and put them into service elsewhere in the house. And the old bed is presently being stored in the basement until we decide whether to use it for the guest room or sell it.

Farewell to Physical Therapy!

Yesterday, I passed the three-month milestone for my knee replacement surgery. And today, I was officially released from physical therapy! Hooray, no more torture sessions! My therapist did a good job in getting my knee back into shape, and now I am on my own for further rehabilitation. The center had become somewhat of a second home after countless visits, so I said “farewell” to the dear old place and the sweet memories left behind!

I will be missing this foot exercise machine at the therapy center immensely. Ahhh!

And, this device has gotten me back into shape for plowing the garden next spring with the mule.

This one helped stretch out me out and keep me limber during each therapy session.

I saw several patients who used this apparatus to build their upper body strength. (Hint: The less you weighed, the easier it was.)

The physical therapists were attentive while patients did their workouts and were always ready to crank the settings up a notch.

This machine was used for rehabilitating male patients with some type of affliction. Um, enough said…

And, I never had the courage to ask about the purpose of this exercise contraption. However, I did notice a manufacture nameplate on it that said “IRS”.

Fall Greetings & Maroon Bells

Maroon Bells, located outside of Aspen, Colorado
Fall 2009 has arrived! If this picture doesn’t get you in the mood for the new season, then there is no hope for you! It’s time to think about putting away the summer clothes and beginning to load the closet with your fall/winter wardrobe. Crisp air will soon greet you in the morning, and colorful leaves will blanket your lawn. Fall is coming, ready or not!

Do you recognize the famous mountain peaks in this photo? The Maroon Bells Scenic Area was one of the highlight destinations on the National Parks of the West tour that we took last fall. The spectacular glacial valley is located right outside of Aspen, Colorado. We arrived mid-morning, and the weather was as gorgeous as the scenery. Add a polarizing filter for the camera lens and clear mountain air into the mix, and you have to work extra hard to take any boring photographs!

I have visited this destinations once before, back in my days as a broke college student in Kansas. I owned a cheap Polaroid camera (remember those?) and could afford very little film. I think I took two or three pictures. Goodness only knows where those pictures are today. And who cares, because they weren’t very good, LOL! Fast forward to almost 40 years later, I am now retired and enjoying this scenery with my sweet hubby and dear friends. I also have much better camera equipment to capture the splendor.

As a special treat for my blog readers, I have put together a brief Photobucket slideshow of the fall scenery at this magical place in the Colorado Rockies. Get comfortable, click on the link below, and enjoy your armchair journey!

Colorado aspen trees in fall
A year ago, we were in Colorado and beginning a western journey with two dear friends of ours. Time has zipped by! After we looped through eastern Utah and southern Colorado, the fall season was dipping into its paint pots and splashing the trees with golden colors. I still plan on sharing some special pictures and stories from that trip with you. In the meantime, here is a lovely country scene from the hillsides above Aspen, Colorado.

(P.S. I uploaded this photo as a little larger file so you can open it up and see it bigger.)

Stairs

stair climbing - the hard way
Today I had the second to the last physical therapy session for my bionic knee. In one more week, I’ll graduate and get flung out into the world on my own! I worked up a sweat this afternoon, especially when the therapist had me walk up and down a flight of stairs in the medical building three times. Argh! Thank goodness I could hold onto the railings on both sides. I may have to practice stair climbing there for a while, LOL, before I can feel confident about the taller stair risers at home!

I also got a range of motion of 125 degrees today, a milestone that I though I would never achieve. It has been a tough battle! Now, if that annoying soreness would just go away...

Freedom from Slavery to the Government

U.S. Constitution

Special Note to My Readers: This is a "soapbox" type of post. Today's topic deviates from my routine stories regarding life at my country cottage and traveling adventures. It is not cheerful subject matter, but I believe it is important to share my thoughts. Please feel free to skip this one if it is too controversial for you, and I welcome you to come back to visit with me later.
Thank you.

We are not attending the 09.12.09 Tea Party March on Washington, D.C. today, but we are certainly there in spirit. Millions of ordinary Americans are standing up and speaking out. Contrary to mainstream media reports, this grassroots movement isn’t about pitting one political party against another one. It is about ordinary Americans voicing their concerns about our country’s direction. Self-serving politicians are not representing American citizens nor acting in America’s best interests. Legislation is being passed that ignores the U.S. Constitution. Our freedoms have been gradually eroding, but now at a rapid pace. In the past year, we are witnessing unprecedented government expansion and intrusions upon the private sector, all accomplished under the guise of solving the latest crisis of the day.

There are many governmental issues right now that concern and alarm me. What is my number one beef? This country is heading toward financial ruin. Our federal government, in particular, is spending at an alarming pace. It is printing record amounts of currency to increase the money supply. This “funny money” will result in high inflation in years to come. The U.S. financial path is not sustainable.

My personal breaking point on government irresponsibility was the enactment of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. This legislation was done in an attempt to remedy problems caused, in large part, by the government itself. The Act established the infamous TARP, the systematic government takeover program of financial institutions. And the massive spending spree of our tax dollars and increased regulatory controls has only gotten worse since last fall.

The fiscal madness has got to stop. And I don’t care how many rude and crude names elected officials call citizens like me when we voice our concerns. Such childish bullying of the people they serve doesn’t make their fiscal irresponsibility disappear.

  • Americans had to work until August 12 this year to pay for federal, state, and local governments (including regulatory costs). Last year’s date was July 16.

  • Government will consume 61.34% of national income this year. The largest component is 30.36% handed over to the federal government. You work more for the government than for yourself and your families.

  • At the time that I publish this post, the U.S. national debt is $11.804 trillion.

  • Each citizen’s share (man, woman, and child) of the U.S. national debt is currently $38,395.

  • Calendar year-to-date federal spending $2.767 trillion. Corresponding revenue is $1.456 trillion. The difference between these two figures is a deficit of $1.311 trillion. That means the federal government is borrowing 47% of this year’s spending.

  • U.S. debt held by foreign countries is $3.485 trillion.

  • Unfunded federal government liabilities total an astounding $59.041 trillion. The liability for every citizen (man, woman, and child) is $192,050.

Despite this dire financial picture, our elected officials are on a fast-track course to create even more federal programs, bureaucracies, debt, and liabilities. They are also creating mountains of legislation and regulations, resulting in larger economic burdens that are passed on to citizens and consumers. The shackles of our personal slavery to government will become even tighter. Meanwhile, elected officials are publicly ridiculing their constituents and dismissing their concerns. Who, precisely, is supposed to be serving who? They also engage in mock partisan bickering, play the blame game, and pit citizens against citizens. Worst of all, they deride the free-market system and declare profits as evil. Excuse me? Capitalism is the true engine of economic prosperity, not government. Our government is biting the hand that feeds it.

This path will continue until the American people stand up, speak up, and clean house. We don’t need foreign terrorists to destroy the United States of America that we know and love. We are allowing our government to do it instead.

Remembrance

Never Forget 9-11-01
Thousands of innocent men, women, and children were killed and injured on September 11, 2001.

Our country was attacked by Muslim terrorists because of their hatred
of our freedoms and way of life.

Never Forget.

Sleeping on a Cloud

new mattress set on the old bed
Our new mattress and box springs were delivered last Saturday. Hooray! Here is a picture before the bed was dressed. We got a Simmons Beautyrest mattress with a plush top and a 5” box springs. This combination is now 1” shorter than our old mattress and a whole lot more comfortable! I am still adjusting to the plush top because it is harder for me to change positions during the night without waking myself up, LOL. However, I am sleeping much better now and my leg with the knee replacement is much happier too!

Our new bed will arrive in another week. It will be a Shaker style, rather than a colonial style. It will also be about 5” closer to the floor. I am really looking forward to not requiring a footrest to get in and out of bed!

Hey, does anyone want to buy our old bed? It's a honey - just too tall for short people!

Happy Birthday, Mom!

a birthday rose for my Mom
This rose is for you, Mom!

Best wishes for a happy birthday!

(Note to my readers: I digitally created this image. I clipped one of my photographs of a rose, applied several filters in Photoshop Elements, and then combined it with a digital scrapbooking background.)

Photo Challenge: The Color Purple

Time for a new Brenda Photo Challenge! The theme is The Color Purple.

The liriope grasses are now blooming in our flowerbeds. Their purple flower stalks begged to be chosen as the center of attention for this challenge. A small, antique milk glass was perfect for complementing the delicate bouquet. I used a mottled paper background for the photo shoot. In Photoshop Elements, I applied a couple of filters to the digital image to give a moody effect. I also cropped it for a pleasing off-center composition. The photo was taken at f/9, 1/60 second, and ISO 800.

September - A Look Ahead

I have been waiting for this month. I want the summer of 2009 behind me. Close the door and forget about it! Onward!

This is a month for more healing and strengthening of my left knee. The doctor and physical therapist say that the swelling will gradually reduce through the rest of the year. The intensity of pain has gone down another notch lately, thank goodness. I still wonder when it will quit hurting completely and it no longer begs for constant attention. (It is more of a pest than that furball rabbit sidekick, Marty!) My leg feels more stable since the manipulation procedure last month. My walking stride is improving too.

Earlier this week, I achieved the magic range of motion target of 120 degrees! I had another follow-up visit with the doctor, and he is pleased with my progress. Hubby and I also resumed our membership at a local fitness center, and workouts at the fitness center will supplement a reduced schedule of physical therapy sessions. Stairs and uneven ground remain as my primary challenges in the future. So the saga continues.

We are looking forward to getting a new mattress set delivered at the end of this week, and a new, shorter bed in a couple of weeks. Hooray! We also plan to refinish the top of our oak breakfast table sometime this month. We will do a distressed painted finish, but we haven’t decided yet on the color – perhaps a chocolate brown or a dark barn red. Any suggestions?

The pin oaks near the front porch have already jumped the gun on the fall season and started to shed some leaves. And the dogwood leaves are beginning to change colors. This has been the wettest summer that we can ever remember. So we wish the grass would get the message about starting into the fall season early too! The life of the vegetable garden has come to an end, and hubby will be tilling it all under soon. Cooler temperatures have arrived this week, and the air conditioner is getting a nice rest.

We had a few house showings during August, but nothing panned out. With the current state of affairs in this country, we don’t expect the economy to improve for years to come. That lessens the possibility of selling any time soon and getting on with all of our retirement dreams. We’ll continue to offer our homestead on the market until a buyer comes along.

We do not have any trips planned in the foreseeable future since I am still on the mend. But our minds are actively on journeys as we both learn more about our photo editing programs and savor our digital image souvenirs. And 2010 is right around the corner, waiting for new traveling adventures!
