The Hobbit...

It’s no secret that we are huge fans of the timeless stories written by J.R.R. Tolkein. Our home is named “Grey Havens,” and we also live on a street that bears the name of another geographical location in Tolkein’s fantasy world. And we’re excited that The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be playing next month at our local movie theater!

We only go to the movies once or twice a year. As a rule, Hollywood products and celebrities don’t interest us. But we gladly make an exception for the Tolkein movies. Filmmaker Peter Jackson, the actors, and production crew have brought Tolkein’s fantasy world to life and created a masterful series. Each one is a visual feast and tells a classic tale of good and evil. Virtues and emotions abound: courage, love, malevolence, danger, beauty, hardship, friendship, sorrow, adventure, magic, greed, optimism, betrayal, and humor, to name a few.

The films are shot in New Zealand, and we absolutely adore the epic scenery. We have probably waited too long to see the splendor in person. So we do the next best thing - travel vicariously by watching these movies!

In anticipation of the new film release, Air New Zealand is running a humorous ad with a Hobbit theme.

That ought to make you giggle!

  1. That was so well done! I loved The Lord of the Rings movies so I probably would enjoy this one; however, I am not going to be able to talk John into it. No way; no how. Sigh. Thanks for the head's up!

  2. I really wish I could get into those movies! My son and daughter in law are huge fans! Maybe one day I'll give them another try! The preview sure looks good!

  3. We did take the granddaughters to see Hobbit, and they loved it. I enjoyed watching Mr. Thornton as Thorin Oakenshield, but something bothered me about the camera work. Still, I'll probably try this one too. It's hard for me to get into Fantasy. Our oldest son tells me that it's History, not Fantasy. :-)

  5. I am a HUGE Lord of the Rings fan also! The only way I get Tim to go is that they are released in the same month as our anniversary, so he never feels that he can refuse me.
We never go to movies either. Now I live five hours from any!

  6. That video is awesome and I'm going to show it to my hubby. We have the DVD The Hobbit and have enjoyed it several times. Maybe we'll even go to the theatre to see the new one. (we don't go to movies either) Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend.

  7. Oh how darling. Did you know, I have never seen any of those movies. I need to. The Desolation of Smaug looks so good. We saw the previews when we went to see Gravity. But I have read the books, and own beautiful editions of them. Fantastic reads, all. I especially love the way the hobbits enjoy their food, LOL. xoxo

  11. That's a great ad! We enjoyed the Hobbit last year and will likely go see this next one. I like the book much better, though. The scenery in the movies is stunning.
