Cherokee National Forest, Cherohala Skyway, Tennessee
To celebrate Mr. Jim feeling a bit better after the paracentesis procedure last week, we scooted off down the road to briefly tour the Cherohala Skyway. We discovered that the fall colors weren’t fully developed in the lower elevations on the Tennessee side, and past prime in the higher elevations on the North Carolina side. My camera didn’t get much of a workout, but we had a lovely time traveling and viewing the scenery.
Of course, we made our customary stop for lunch at the Tellico Grains Bakery. In my humble opinion, this place has the best BLT sandwich in the universe. Benton’s smoked bacon is a key ingredient, along with the bakery’s legendary herb flatbread. One of these days, we vow to visit on a Saturday and devour a gourmet, wood-fired pizza.
My little Outback made a slight detour on the trip back home so that we could stock up on some smoked bacon and ham slices from Benton's Smoky Mountain Country Hams. You can check out a previous blog post about this fine Tennessee business HERE. A young man rang up our order, but it was Mr. Allan Benton himself who cheerfully greeted us as we walked in the door and shook our hands to express thanks as we left with our cherished purchases.

If you want to know what kind of food God will serve in heaven, then you need to place an order and find out!
oh, yum! :) glad jim is feeling better, too!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you were both on the road again. I love" what God is serving", even though I'm not a big fan of ham or bacon, I look forward to coming to the banquet.(not just yet)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photo, Donna.
ReplyDeleteI really like places where the owner meets and greets. Makes one feel good. :)
Oh...that sounds like a wonderful trip and so nice to hear that Mr. Jim is feeling a bit better! You know, this hasn't been the best year for color around here but your photo is just stunning!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got to take a nice drive too. The mountains are always good for the soul and the food sounds amazing! I'm off to follow some of the links and see if it's someplace we can go the next time we are up there! Hugs, Diane

ReplyDeleteWow! That's high praise. I love both bacon and ham and this is very intriguing to me.
ReplyDeleteThe color in those hills is beautiful. I find that the camera has not been able to capture the depth of color that I see beyond my windows even now, though it is certainly on the wane.
Enjoy your goodies. I wonder what yummy things are coming from the kitchen...ham sandwiches or something more gourmet...
Beautiful autumn colours in those mountains! How nice that you and Mr. Jim got out for a scenic drive and also enjoyed some fine food. I love your last sentence. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is simply gorgeous! And a wood-fired pizza? Sounds wonderful. I'd even be happy to stand outside and smell that wood smoke while looking at that beautiful view!
ReplyDeleteSo glad Mr Jim is feeling a little better and you are making the best of it. Any restaurant with the name bakery in it is usually a good bet and that BLT sounds fabulous!!!

Hi Donna, lovely to see Jim is feeling better and a road trip could be accomplished. I've always wanted to go to Tellico, now I want to go to the bakery as well -lol-. If you get time, google the Rainbow Mountains of China...more of God's wonder.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun day! Beautiful picture and my mouth is just watering for one of those BLT!
ReplyDeleteAlways so glad when Jim is feeling better. Your photo is beautiful. And, the sandwich is right down my alley

It's nice to know that they are still making things the old fashioned way.
That is such good news Donna!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely way to celebrate by enjoying the beauty of this wondrous world we live in!
The rich Autumn colours full of reds and golds just take my breath away.
Wishing you both a happy weekend.
Shane ;)
A short jaunt to see the painted landscape and have some hearty food is probably just what the doctor ordered. I'm glad Jim was well enough so the two of you could get out.
ReplyDeleteHugs.
I'm so glad you two could get away and have a fun day together. Your photo is gorgeous! I could almost smell the smoke from the smokehouse video.

Sounds like it was a gorgeous day to get out and enjoy the beautiful scenery. It's always such a treat when you get to eat at one of your favorite places. I have a favorite diner in Berkeley,Ca that serves the best grilled cheese sandwich I've ever eaten. I could eat one every day...maybe more than once a day:-)
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy y'all were able to get out and enjoy the day! Wood fire pizza sounds delish!
ReplyDeleteGlad you two got to get out on a FUN journey for a change! Love the photo Girl...
