Photo of the Week - Rice Grist Mill

Norris Dam State Park, Anderson County, Tennessee

We visited this picturesque grist mill in early October. It is located about 35 miles north from our home, near the towns of Norris and Rocky Top. The mill was originally constructed in 1798 in Union County. It was dismantled and rebuilt on Clear Creek, southeast of Norris Dam. The charming old building serves as a landmark in the Norris Dam State Park.

Mr. Jim reports that he used to visit this mill with his parents when he was a little redheaded lad. He thoroughly enjoyed wading in Clear Creek, right next to the mill, searching and catching crawdads that lurked under the stones. Ah, sweet memories!

  1. It certainly is a beautiful old mill and a charming spot nestled in the hill. How nice that Mr. Jim has fond memories of visiting as a boy too. I think I'd enjoy having a little sit in one of those rocking chairs and just enjoy the view too. Have a blessed day. Pam

  6. I'd pull up a chair too and enjoy the surroundings. Funny when you mentioned about Jim catching crawdads, we used to hike up to a creek called Devil's Elbow (kinda creepy looking back) and do the same thing. Catch and release I'm sure and never having to worry about being so far from home where the front door was always unlocked.

  8. The mill is set so picturesquely in the woods. What a wonderful place to play, explore, and dream. Lucky Mr. Jim to have it nearby during his boyhood. Your photo evokes all the wonder of it.
