Photo of the Week - Sunset at Home (and Photo App Recommendation)

Knoxville, Tennessee

As much as I enjoy my Fuji and Nikon camera systems, I also appreciate the simple convenience of capturing scenes with my iPhone, such as this lovely sunset. No traveling was involved for this capture. I took it less than 10 feet from my front door! I am constantly amazed at how easy it is to take beautiful pictures from a mobile phone these days. Built-in cameras keep getting better and better!

I'm an unashamed editing junky, so I can’t resist some post-processing play. People frequently ask me to recommend mobile phone apps. I have about 100 various photography-related apps on my iPhone. (Yes, I like to collect them!) But my favorite go-to app for editing is Snapseed. Hands down. No contest. It is based on the technology of the popular Nik plug-in software for Photoshop (another personal favorite). Except for applying my standard brush stamp, I used only Snapseed to edit the photo. But I could have readily used the new text feature that was added in the latest update!

Snapseed is available for both iOS and Android devices. Editing is quick, intuitive, and comprehensive. It even has a spot removal tool. And guess what? The app is free! If you download it and think it is too complicated, you will be happy to know that there are many excellent tutorials on the Internet. Simply do a search. In my opinion, the best tutorial is provided by

Google currently owns Snapseed, and they appear to be serious about maintaining it. Many significant software improvements have been rolled out this year. If you have never heard of it or tried it, I hope you will test it out. It might become your personal favorite too!

  1. You must have recommended it before, Donna, because I have it. I seldom use it, but after seeing this gorgeous photo, I want to!

  2. Hi. A friend referred me to your site when my husband died on 12/13/14. Just now checking it out and I love it. You keep it real. You get it. My friends disappeared. They did not know how to relate to a 60 year old widow. My name is Vanessa but I go by Ness and I live in Belleville IL which is 16 miles east of St. Louis MO. I am owned by a 7 yr old Chihuahua named Colin. He is my world. My husband's name is Roger. It was a second marriage for both and we married in 1995. We both have 3 kids and He was 18 years my senior. How do I get hooked up to get posts automatically? I need a lifeline.

    1. Hey Ness, it's Debbie. Just go to the Follow By Email on the right side bar and you'll get Donna's updates automatically :)

    2. Donna, this photo is gorgeous and I only take shots with my iPhone any more. I do not have another camera :( I'm going to check out Snapseed! I currently do a little editing in Picassa but that's about it. Hope you are doing well! xoxoxo

  3. How pretty this is. The sky is on fire. I'll have to check that app out. Thanks for mentioning it

  4. How amazing skies can be. As a sunset the reds are so beautiful - but when a forest fire so horrific!

No more apps for me Donna - I don't even like using my iPhone. These days what I truly want a quiet life away from the madding crowd!

  5. What a beautiful sunset. You do know your way around editing photos, Donna!

  6. So beautiful!

I do love my phone and never use the camera anymore. But, I don't use it for editing; my pea brain won't allow it. So instead, I sometimes use :)

Marty, here! Donna loves comments, and I faithfully pass them on to her. Thank you so much for visiting!
