Vee's Note Card Party - Lexington Ponies

Once again, it’s time for Vee’s monthly note card party!

This time last year, we visited Lexington, Kentucky, to see the spring thoroughbred races at Keeneland racetrack. After enjoying a few days at the track, we decided to do some “freestyle” photography around the horse farms in the area before heading home. While I was taking photos of some beautiful horses out in the countryside, the owner of one of the horse breeding farms stopped by and invited us back to his place for an impromptu photo shoot of his new spring foals! Talk about lady luck shining on us! 

Lexington Ponies - A Thank You Letter

To show our gratitude for the impromptu invitation we received to visit a Kentucky thoroughbred farm and see young foals, we printed up some enlargements of my photographs and sent them to the farm owner. The images seemed to be a big hit, and we received a delightful thank you letter.

Lexington Ponies - Part 3

This is the final chapter to my story of the Lexington ponies. I hope you have read the other two posts earlier this week. If not, please read them and come back. Yes, I’ll wait for you. 

OK, are you all caught up in the story? The owner of a thoroughbred horse farm invited us to do some impromptu photography of his newborn foals - the “wee ones” (said with an Irish lilt). He was on his way to run an errand, but he instructed us to tell his staff to let us in the security gate and show us around.

We hightailed it back to the farm and said the magic words. In the gate we went!  It took us a little while to work our way back to the foaling barn. We stopped at several places to ask directions, and the staff was calling ahead as we went. At one of the stops was this precious pair!

Lexington Ponies - Part 2

Continuing my story from yesterday, we left Keeneland racetrack and decided to do some (what I call) “freestyle” travel photography. It’s a method where you throw caution and planning to the wind and just wing it. Turn here. Turn there. Oh, that looks pretty over there! Get the idea?

The narrow roads and adjacent stone fences around the Lexington area present a serious challenge to this type of adventure. The patchwork of stone fences is similar to an Irish countryside. Immigrants and slaves painstakingly created them over two hundred years ago. They are quite beautiful, but the stones are not conducive for safely parking vehicles out of the roadways. 

My husband was able to park in a grassy area far enough for me to pop out of the vehicle and take this long-distance photo. Amusingly, the horse was nibbling away at its wooden fence.

Lexington Ponies - Part 1

When we came back from our trip to visit relatives in Indiana this past April, we stopped for a few days in Kentucky, including the Lexington area. We used to visit Keeneland racetrack every year, but our annual sojourn went by the wayside after we bought the country acreage. So we made a point of securing reservations for a couple days at Keeneland again!
