More Charleston Street Scenes

Would you like to see more of my street photography attempts in Charleston? Let’s see a show of hands. Okay, I see some raised, so I’ll go ahead and share a few images that didn’t make the first cut for this weekend’s personal photo challenge.

As we were venturing down King Street one afternoon, I noticed a charming Italian cafe along a side street. It was mid-afternoon, that glorious time period for restaurant workers to take a bit of a breather between the lunch and dinner crowds. This fellow was checking his smart phone messages while having a smoke break. The ivy covered exterior and the colorful flags added to the charm of the scene.

Rather than pointing my camera at people, I found that it was far safer to take photos of the city dogs being walked by their owners. It was difficult to keep up with the typical fast clip of the dog walkers, but I managed to snap this canine pair mid-stride. I thought it was funny that one of the pooches insisted on bringing along its favorite ball.

A young lady passed me on the sidewalk, and I noticed that she was toting a little grocery package. I did a quick about-face to record her errand, framing up the composition to include some of the architecture and landscaping. To emphasize the graphic quality, I bumped up the saturation.  And then I used one of my favorite Photoshop plug-ins, Topaz Simplify, and changed the image to a painterly style.

  2. Oh the colors you captured in that lost shot make it my favorite. Good thing you mentioned the ball as I'd have overlooked it. The first photo has such a relaxed, vintage feel to it. Very nice.
