Grandfather Clocks

When I recently posted a close-up picture of one of our two grandfather clocks for a photo challenge, there was quite a bit of interest to see more of this handmade clock. So I took some additional pictures to share! Hubby’s uncle Lawrence was quite a craftsman to make these magnificent timepieces.

Here is the black walnut clock that resides in the great room. Its face was the subject in my close-up photo. We’ve had this beauty for over 20 years and it was the first one that we purchased. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the wood was from a 100 year old tree that was in the front yard of his wife’s childhood home. Wood this lovely doesn't require a stain because it is the real thing!

A couple years later, we decided to have Lawrence make us another one, this time a bit fancier and made of natural cherry. This clock now graces our front center hallway, tucked in-between the double arches. So we don’t drive ourselves too crazy with a lot of “dong-dong-donging” going on, we have only this clock set to strike on the quarter, half, and hour increments.

Hope you enjoyed this little show and tell tour!

  2. Thank you, Kim! Every time I look at the clocks, I remember Lawrence. He was a sweet, gentle man. I never got to meet hubby's dad since he passed away years ago, and this one brother of his was the next best thing.

  8. Thank you, Cindra! The clocks are cherished heirlooms. He was quite a gentle and loving soul, in addition to being talented. Sadly, he died of asbestosis and other cancers related to his blue-collar employment as a pipefitter.

  11. Thanks, Donna! I was tinkering with my blog again this morning. I was trying to get another background template to work and I finally concluded that the template was messed up instead of me, LOL! So I picked this other cottage-looking one instead!

  12. Hi, Sally! Thanks for looking at my clocks!

Glad that you like the new background look! I finally found one I liked and was able to successfully add it. I liked another one better, but the link didn't work right. It is a pretty change!

  14. Thanks, Tabitha! We're going to have to squeeze them in whenever we sell this place and downsize to something smaller!

I'm doing fine, sweetie. Tired and hot, but that is typical for summertime, LOL. Hope you are hugging an air conditioner!

  15. Donna, your clocks are beautiful! I have a little wall clock that had belonged to my father. It's a manual wind that chimes on the quarter, half, and 3-quarter and also gongs on the hour. I've had a lot of problems keeping it running, and had it cleaned professionally, also a new mainspring, a year ago. Right now it's working perfectly. It's not near as pretty as yours, but it has a lot of sentimental value to me.

  16. Thank you, Lynne! It is wonderful that you got your keepsake wall clock cleaned and repaired. It should keep good time for many years ahead. Old-fashioned timepieces can run for hundreds of years if properly maintained.
