Alaska Trip - Tenakee Springs (Part 4)

I have some more photos to share of this charming little coastal village in southeastern Alaska!

There are homes located on both sides of the main dirt road through town. One side borders the shore, and the other side is a steep hill. It was interesting to note that many of the hillside residents use a pulley-cart system to tote heavy items up to their homes. Ingenious!

The cottages also have very steep stairs that provide the owners a healthy cardio workout with every trip. Much to the delight of my camera, some stairs looked like they were losing a battle with Mother Nature.

A weathered railing and steps were beautifully adorned with ferns.

Abundant daylight hours really help plant life to grow quickly in the summertime.  This wooden stairway was almost completely covered with berry brambles.  It was very pretty, but I sure wouldn't want to try to venture up this way!

  1. Love these! And that third photo is my favorite. Reminds me of an old campground in NW Wisconsin.

  3. That is really interesting. I wonder how they ever got the building supplies up the hill to build the houses! It must be very costly to do so. The stairways are really pretty but I'd worry about critters under the stairs along with the brambles. :) Great photos!!

  4. As long as no one lives there, it's very pretty. Otherwise, it's just plain treacherous. Wonder what they look like in winter.

  5. I love it! I tried really hard to get that look when we had a wooden deck, alas Handy Andy kept clipping. I wondered and then I caught him doing it. We now have a concrete stair case. No greenery. Looking forward to the next post.

  6. Hi Donna, I love that photo with the wooden steps and ferns. SO pretty... Wonder why they don't clip away some of the excess growth in summer? I guess the pulley idea would be good if you had heavy boxes to carry up there..

    Thanks for sharing.

  7. Love the lushness of the ferns, but wouldn't want to tackle the brambles at all. They grab like nothing else!

  9. Wow, I can't imagine going up and down those steps to cart groceries in the house. I love how overgrown they are but I imagine that can be a real pain as well. Made for pretty pictures though

  10. We had older friends who lived on a hillside when I was a little girl. They had a pulley system for things too heavy to carry up to the house. And he had a pulley system for the mail that was delivered at the bottom of many stairs! The postman put the mail inside the box that was attached to a pulley, put something on it to let them know there was mail and they didn't have to go down for the mail! Love the photos of the steps!
