Photo of the Week - Fall Sunset at the Cove

Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

During the photography summit last October, a newfound friend and I went out to the Cove with our camera gear. We were in search of black bears, known to snack on acorns at a particular spot. Unfortunately, we didn’t spot any bears. (I have yet to ever witness a single bear in the Smokies, by the way.) But we did witness a spectacular sunset. It lit up the sky and our hearts!

Please keep me in your prayers. I experienced a vitreous detachment in my right eye yesterday. I had a similar experience in my left eye a couple of years ago. Big black threads are floating in my vision, and I see flashes of light. A specialist quickly evaluated me, and he confirmed that the retina looks okay. Let's hope that it doesn't progress any further and that I can adjust to seeing large floaters, now in both eyes.

It's no fun getting old. And it is certainly more complicated when you live a solo life.

  1. I'm truly saddened to hear about another eye problem dear Donna. Hopefully all will be managed and you can accommodate the floaters. They are so annoying though, and it's just not fair you should have this problem in both eyes.

Lovely photo - must say I'm kinda glad you have never confronted a bear though!!!

Take care - sending good wishes.

  3. Beautiful photo, Donna. But oh, my goodness! Your eyes. What a challenge that must be. I will be praying for you and for that situation. That's quite scary.

  6. We have also been on bear hunting expeditions in the Smokies with none to be found. We did see one some place where we never expected...in the median of I-77 in Virginia! But the sunset, now THAT is something to see! It is absolutely breathtaking. Several years ago I also had a vitreous detachment and it scared the crap out of me! I was able to get right in to the eye doc and after a while, I was back to normal-ish. I am glad to hear the retina is OK. I have floaters all the time but have adjusted to them and blink them away often :(

  8. Exquisite photography! I am sorry that you've experienced another incident and glad that everything looks okay with the retina. Still, it is unsettling. At least, I find the less troublesome floaters a pain.

  10. Yes, getting older is no fun! Aches and pains of all sorts. I've had vision issues too, as my vision has deteriorated the past 6 months, and they think I have a cataract in my one good eye. I'll be thinking of you.

  11. The photo is gorgeous and I can't imagine "looking" for bears. Yikes! I'm so sorry to hear about your eye but sending positive healing thoughts and prayers that it gets better and big hugs!

  12. The reason you don't see black bears there is because they've been captured, shipped and released here...in my Cove. As have the timber rattlers and no, I'm not kidding. Beautiful photo and you're ever so right...hard getting old w/out family or friends close by. Take care of YOU.
